Thermal dissipation with led profiles

24-01-2019

The majority of people would just see a led profile as a piece of aluminium which is used to hold a led strip in a kind of fashionable manner… and although that’s true, it goes much further than that!

Every day we are seeing more and more led strips appearing on the market with a higher luminous performance, such as 120, 160 and even 200 lumen per watt. However, this will unfortunately generate heat levels which can reduce the lifespan of the led unless we can get rid of it. Even if two profiles have the same aluminium content, the importance of a correct and incorrect design in the profile can mean a 30% difference in their thermal dissipating capacities.

We will only achieve optimum ventilation through conduction (which means that the profile must absorb the maximum amount of heat produced by the led) by designing the profile in a way that both the geometry of the profile and the distance between its trims optimise the thermal dissipation. Otherwise the thermal energy will experience great resistance when distributing through the profile.

This and other similar factors, like the profile finish (an anodised finish will always dissipate faster and in a more stable way than a lacquered one), are highly considered when we have to design our profiles and this way we can offer a highly competitive and functional product. We offer our customers our 30 year experience as a guarantee of good design and manufacturing of our customised profiles.

Apart from an adequate aluminium profile, we must also use thermal dissipation tape which helps us transfer as quickly as possible, the heat produced by the led strip to the profile. This is recommended for any power but totally necessary for any led strip with power levels higher than 15W per metre. We must remember that the tape itself does not dissipate heat, but transfers it onto the profile.

Profiles should be installed with the led strips in sufficiently ventilated areas and the led should not be in constant operation 24hours/day. This will help to achieve a long lifespan of the led strip.
